The Moon

The watery star...

The Moon, in astrology, defines our instinctive responses to issues and events in our lives. The sign she is in, the house she dwells in and the communication lines she has with other planets and points of influence further define our innate nature and our emotional reactions. This by nature watery star in astrology defines our needs and what we must have in order to feel secure.

The symbol for the Moon is its crescent. Most commonly drawn in its waxing new Moon phase. There are eight phases of the Moon. The most recognized work on the phases is done by Dane Rudhyar. Robert Blaschke also writes about the Moon phases in Volume I of his astrology series. Another author, who has excellent insights into the Moon is Tracy Marks. A new book on the Moon—Moon Tides and Soul Passages by Maria Kay Simms—provides wonderful insights into the Moon written in a manner that makes this book suitable for anyone. It also has a CD so you can calculate your Moon phases. This list is not to exclude any of the excellent astrological writers out there nor is it an endorsement of these three.

Some of the best advise I received about learning to understand astrology for myself, was to watch the moon for a full cycle. Paying attention to how people behave and what is happening from the simple perspective of the Moon. Of course then you could extend this for a year and learn about the inter-relationship between the Sun and the Moon.

In astrology only two planets are considered feminine, the Moon and Venus. As such both of them carry a lot of weight. The Moon zips around the signs once approx. every 27.3 days. It is the fastest moving planet; yet accurately defined, it is a satellite of the Earth.

The Moon is one of the five inner or personal planets. It defines our childhood, mother, roots and learned responses. How you were nurtured and provided for in childhood gives you the tools to care and provide for others later in life. During our formative years we tend to behave in a manner best described by our Moon. We are "becoming" our Sun but we are our Moon, it is what we know best from the first moment we become cognisant of our surroundings. The Ascendant is the facade and learned behaviour we develop to protect our inner sensitivities.

The Moon makes her home in the sign of Cancer and as such is watery by nature. The element of water is defined as sensitive, empathetic and emotional by astrology. However, only one quarter of the Moons are in a water sign. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, an earth sign, which according to ancient astrology makes this placement a good one. The fall of a planet is the opposite sign of its exaltation, in the case of the Moon that would be Scorpio. Scorpio is one of the water signs; the element of water is compatible with the temperament of the Moon, yet the Moon is said to be uncomfortable in Scorpio. The sign opposite the ruling sign is the detriment placement, which in the case of the Moon is Capricorn.

Rules can make astrology confusing, yet how literally should these be taken. It is one thing to define the Moon placement detrimental in a horary chart, yet another to define someone's natal Moon as such. From my observations over the years, there is no definitively bad placement of any planet, each simply describes a different set of circumstances. Planets by placement and through aspects describe and define possibilities and options. We make the choices on how that energy is expressed, humans, and each of us has a different path through this current life. As astrologers we can describe the potential but we can never know how that potential will be realised by the individual.

On one hand the Moon is very powerful against the Sun, during a solar eclipse the Moon passes in front of the Sun and blocks the Sun's rays from reaching the Earth. During a solar Eclipse the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. On the other during a lunar eclipse the Moon is not visible from our earth-bound perspective, as the Earth's shadow blocks the light from the Sun. During a Lunar Eclipse the Earth is physically between the Sun and the Moon. On average there are four eclipses a year, two solar and two lunar.

Our environment gives us a set of standard emotional responses that are deemed appropriate by our society. The media plays a strong role in educating us on how emotions should be expressed. When we are sad, we are supposed to cry. When we fall in love, we are supposed to be blissfully happy, hovering near 7th heaven or on cloud nine. Upon being faced with someone's sad fortune or dilemma we are supposed to be sympathetic. Our emotional reactions are portrayed by the world we live in, and often those definitions make us question our own responses as wrong as we may fail to fit the mould.

The element of water, the natural element associated with the Moon, is very emotional, sensitive and ever-changing. Water signs are sympathetic, compassionate and changeable. Water Moons rely strongly on how they feel. The three water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Which brings forth a question - can an earth Moon be compassionate, sympathetic, etc.?

Cancer Moon describes a caring, nurturing (mothering) person who likes to provide security for others and self. The Cancer Moon individual is a romantic at heart. They love lace, candle-lit dinners, and collect mementoes. A person with this Moon is likely to at the very least have a shoe-box with special movie-tickets, snapshots, postcards, and that special button or a dried rose tucked away somewhere. The past is important to Cancer, as are roots and family. If it has survived the test of time, it has become something that provides a feeling of security for Cancer energy. On a smaller scale security is food, knowing that you have a candy bar tucked away in your purse or pocket, should you suddenly feel hungry or need comfort.

Cancer is thrifty energy and will save for that inevitable, rainy day. Their mood changes, like the hands on the clock, every two hours. This water energy is intuitive, loyal, sympathetic and softhearted. This domestic energy is comforting to be around. Note, however, that it may take some time to win the confidences of a person with this private, protective and retiring emotional response mechanism.

Scorpio Moon people are reserved, compassionate, steady and acquisitive. Nothing about their emotions is shallow or superficial. Your secrets are safe with these people trustworthy and loyal people. Scorpios like the other water signs seem to be wise beyond their years, always ready to counsel another soul in emotional need. The emotional responses of a Scorpio Moon person are intense and passionate. On the surface these are strong, courageous, strong-willed, and magnetic individuals, chances are that there is a deep undercurrent. Cancer is like the Ocean, but Scorpio is that deep, hidden lake in the middle of the wilderness. Often these people are unaware of the impact they have when they unleash that intensity.

Mysterious and self-protective, they need privacy and vehemently protect what is theirs. Don't peek inside the purse of a Scorpio Moon Woman (generally speaking any possession considered private), it may hold nothing of importance but no-one is allowed to see its contents. A wounded Scorpio can turn very nasty, and one effective way to inflict that hurt is to ignore the Scorpio Moon. With a Scorpio Moon the trust needs to be earned.

Pisces Moon is the synonym for the word to feel. It is so sensitive and sympathetic, often accompanied by those watery eyes. Owners of this Moon conceal their emotions behind a facade of stalwart bravado, to prevent others from inflicting hurt upon their gentle souls. Romantic in an ethereal kind of way often has these natives daydreaming rather than actually living those romantic fantasies. These people don't appear to be quite here on earth. They tend to see good in everyone even when facts seem to indicate otherwise.

Pisces Moon people are very devoted to others, the wants and wishes of others come first. Pisces Moon can be the rescuer - save the rest of us from ourselves. Pisces Moon people are always immersed in relationships, without another they do not feel complete, and perhaps because they need to look after those needier than themselves. Pisces Moon people seem to instinctively know how others feel, just imagine living in the world that sensitised. Walking through a sea of emotions every day, unable to shut the human experience out.

Then there are the practical and efficient Earth signs. It appears Earth signs prefer to nurture the material needs before the emotional ones. Yet each of the three earth signs have emotions - they are merely expressed in a more sensible way. The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

Taurus Moon takes pleasure in nature and is basically fond of the good life. Taurus likes good food, sex, music, movies, books and money - often in that order. They need to be to be near nature, have time to enjoy both the Sunrise and Sunset, and be given the opportunity to own their own little piece of Earth to plant, weed and nurture. Taurus is very sensuous, and the sense of touch is important. Whether they are cooking a meal, painting a master piece or making love, they like to take their time and don't like to be rushed into anything. To rush them is to rock the boat.

This is a solid, reliable Moon sign. Their practical approach to life's curveballs makes these individuals a source of comfort. During their formative years they learned that when your basic needs are met you are free to pursue your desires without worrying about where your next meal is coming from. They are supportive, giving enjoying the role of the provider. Most Taureans enjoy cooking for friends and family, and always have enough for the unexpected visitor. Whether wealthy or poor Taurus rising and Taurus Moon people in particular, appear to be born to the good life, others will presume so in either case.

Moon in Virgo people apart from being practical are analytical to the extent of being able to categorise things. What is organisation if it not making sense out of disorder, and by doing so creating harmony? Moon in Virgo people are helpful. Virgo placements make the person adaptable and hardworking. They can master handling boring nit-picking matters others want to avoid. Virgo people notice things others never even saw, let's not automatically assume this makes them picky, let's call it discriminating. They are inquisitive yet they seldom probe because they are also sensitive. With a Virgo Moon it is likely the individual has learned to research all aspects of a situation, and because of it knows how to express their feelings with clarity and uncanny perception.

Virgo qualities are diligence, efficiency and modesty. They approach things in an orderly and methodical manner. They want to be helpful, obliging and dependable, giving is more valuable than receiving. This sign is bound to make a person health-conscious, even in the face of hardship. What they may also express, unwittingly, from time to time is timidness, servitude, and submission. They may worry too much, be workaholic and overly critical of others and self.

Last but not least the Moon in Capricorn, the salt of the Earth. These people are very reserved, and not very easy to decipher. They appreciate the wisdom of older people, take time to listen and have the patience to listen through the repetition, because Capricorn Moons feel their elders have a lot to offer. These people were born old and responsible. These individuals are conservative, serious, practical and keep tight control on their expressions. They are diligent and hardworking. Their approach is cautious and they like to plan ahead, and because they are so responsible they generally have a good sense of timing.

Capricorns are law-abiding and reliable citizens. The pillars of society. Acquiring a position, which offers them respect and respectability is important to them, and it brings with it a sense of accomplishment. Something that took time to accomplish. Capricorn rules ambition and executive capabilities as well as enterprise. With age comes wisdom, it is a learning process and when the Capricorn person learns it, there is absolutely no going back. That is when Capricorn becomes the pillar of strength and the master of knowledge learned through experience. Although these people are born old, they seem to get younger as the years roll by, and also they learn to take themselves less seriously

How does it feel when you have an air Moon or does it feel? Air Moons are analytical, inquisitive and detached. They can see the logic and reson even in emotions. These people are intellectual and rational. There are three air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

Gemini Moons have a quick wit, and a comedic approach to life. Jack Benny and George Burns were born with this Moon. Gemini is very versatile and lively quicksilver energy. With this energy the scope of interest is very varied, and chances are you have acquired a lot of skills. Knowledge is safety. Gemini is the reporter of the zodiac; ever-curious in their pursuit of information. Children with this Moon often learn to talk earlier than the average baby. (I have two kids with Moon in Gemini...) These people are usually very articulate and enjoy the taste of words.

They are sociable, and have expressive hands. Geminis are telephone people. Gemini energy never seems to age and they attract young friends to their side as they resonate such youthful vibrations from their own being. Boredom comes easily to one with air energy. Because Gemini is one of the mutable signs, the people with this energy seldom are true to the characteristics as they are ever changing and adapting to their environment. In order to understand their own emotions and those of others Geminis talk about it, rationalize it, which can be a challenge for a more reactionary Moon.

Libra Moon is the relationship Moon. They need other people and their approval. Libras take others into consideration. They see their point of view as well as their own. Libras are called indecisive. In their constant quest for balance they appear lazy and indecisive. In order for them to understand how they feel, they need to know how the other feels.

Libra "hates" arguments and conflicts, they will avoid "hostile" situations at any cost, as they want to get along with everyone. A well-adjusted Libra personality is sociable, sharing, co-operating, mediating, pleasing, and tactful. Libras appreciate the harmonious and beautiful things in life. They are fond of art. There is an innate beauty with a Libra person. Diane, the character in Cheers represents the combination of Gemini and Libra energy.

Aquarius is the most aloof of the air signs. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, and its approach to life is intellectual. Mind rules in a detached manner, they observe from the safety of having no noticeable emotional attachment to things. These people care rather for humanity than just one individual.

Like all fixed signs Aquarius is determined and resolute. One lovely beautiful quality they have is tolerance. They are friendly and they don't judge, but a true Aquarian accepts others as they are, of course they'd like others to return the favour. They seek the truth in anything, and have an intense dislike for lies. They are open- minded and idealistic. This Moon likes freedom without strings attached, and may very well be a bit eccentric. They are unpredictable, original, and non-conformist and have a keen mind. The line between brilliance and insanity is imperceptible, and Aquarius can be both. Tell them that they are not unique and you'll have hurt their feelings.

Fire signs are enthusiastic, energetic and spontaneous. This element is often quick-tempered. They are not the ones to hold a grudge. They are too busy living. There are three fire signs - Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and each has its unique energy.

Moon in Aries people are expansive, impatient, and they can be annoyingly self-confident. This "Act now and think about the consequences later"-energy leaves caution to the wind. Folks with this energy flowing prominently seem to have all the answers, and will give those to you whether you like it or not. What's worse is that they are usually right. The extremely enthusiastic Aries energy is always into new things, initiating ground-breaking enterprises on any scale is the strong suit of this spontaneous and inventive energy. Bringing things to conclusion is preferably left in the hands of others, as the Aries person is already into something new. This energy gets things done, the more the better, juggling just one thing at a time is extremely boring for this self-motivated energy flow.

Aries people are self-reliant often to the point of proclaiming they know best. What's the point of thinking about it let's do something about it. The instinctive reaction is to take action. Act in haste and repent at your leisure might on the surface sound like an Aries quote, but can you truly envision an Aries Moon repenting anything at length. It's been, it's done, it's gone and now onto something completely different. The worst thing you can do to an Aries person is to ignore him.

Moon in Leo is the child moon. They crave to be the centre of attention. They need an audience of at least one. A Leo feeling under the weather needs a lot of TLC. On the same token they are generous and gregarious all they ask is that you boost their ego. Leos are self-assured and have a commanding presence. My Leo Moon friend loves to say: "I just want to play and have fun", what's more child-like than that statement.

They are affectionate, strong-willed, fun-loving and buoyant. A well-adjusted Leo energy is confident, optimistic and high spirited. Leos are very affectionate and romantic. They really know how to make their mate feel desirable in every manner and form. I think a balanced Leo is like a big, lovable, huggable pussycat. Perhaps a tad too self-centred and overfilled with confidence for the common folk, we are talking regal after all. To hurt them is to withhold praise.

Moon in Sagittarius people are jovial, happy-go-lucky and loads of fun. They want others to like them, and enjoy making others laugh at what they say or do. Filled with pure joy of living they don't often pay too close attention to their speech but tend to say the first thing that comes to mind. The world calls this the "foot-in-the-mouth disease". These people hate lies and pretence. I am what I am is their motto, and they allow the same freedom to others.

Straight to the point and no holds barred, they tell the truth and are quickly forgiven as they are so affable. This energy gets easily into arguments. Sagittarius rules the higher mind, the Stars, dreams, as well as courts of law. These people have a healthy respect for what is right, and want justice. They are quick to point out injustices. Not much can hurt these people, limiting their freedom would be a frustration to them.

Don't fit the mould? Well, astrology is more complex than the brief outline above. There are aspects, houses and whole array of complexities to add to the confusion. As I mentioned in the intro it is a life long study.
